Get Ready for Big Changes to LTL Freight Classification

Updated LTL Freight Classification System Launching July 2025

If you’re in the trucking or freight industry, mark your calendars for July 19, 2025. This is the big day for the launch of the revamped less-than-truckload (LTL) freight classification system. Originally planned for May, this updated system from the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) is coming a little later than expected—but for good reason. They’re making sure everything is streamlined and ready to go.

The new system, called ClassIT+, promises to be a game changer. It’s more than just an update; it’s a complete overhaul of the current online ClassIT system. This enhanced digital platform includes a new application programming interface (API) that’s designed to make classifying freight easier, more accurate, and much more user-friendly.

Why Does This Matter?

If you’ve ever dealt with incorrectly classified freight, you know how costly it can get. Higher fees, miscommunications, and wasted time are just a few of the headaches. NMFTA is tackling these issues head-on with their updated National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) platform.

According to Joe Ohr, NMFTA’s Chief Operating Officer, the goal is clear: simplify the process and make it more transparent for shippers, carriers, and third-party logistics providers (3PLs). "These updates will increase the overall efficiency for classifying freight so that users can experience more accurate results on the first attempt," Ohr explained.

ClassIT+ isn’t just about reducing errors. They’re aiming to improve the overall experience for all users. The new system is designed to work better for everyone involved in the freight process.

How Did We Get Here?

The NMFTA didn’t make these changes overnight. This year alone, the Freight Classification Development Council held three public meetings to discuss updates to the NMFC and ClassIT platforms. Industry professionals were encouraged to share their thoughts and give feedback on proposed changes.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, NMFTA hosted special listening sessions to get input from users. If you’re curious about what’s coming, the NMFTA website has many helpful resources, including videos that explain how these updates will affect shippers, carriers, and 3PLs.

What Else Does NMFTA Do?

Beyond freight classification, the NMFTA also develops digital standards for the LTL industry. Cybersecurity is an increasingly large focus too, as the NMFTA conducts research and offers educational resources to make sure those standards stay safe and secure.

What’s Next for You?

Whether you’re shipping truck parts or managing logistics for a fleet, staying ahead of these changes is critical. With the new ClassIT+ system rolling out in July 2025, now is the time to start learning about the updates and how they’ll impact your business.
