DESCRIPTION
A camshaft is a rotating component of an internal combustion engine that is responsible for opening and closing the engine's valves. The camshaft has lobes, or protrusions, that push against the valve lifters, which in turn push against the valves to open them. The rotation of the camshaft is synchronized with the rotation of the crankshaft through a timing belt or chain. In this way, the camshaft controls when and how long each valve opens and closes, allowing air and fuel to enter the combustion chamber and exhaust gases to exit.
