DESCRIPTION
The camshaft is a component in the engine of a truck that controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves. It is driven by the crankshaft via a timing belt or chain, and its lobes push on the lifters or followers to actuate the valves. The shape and size of the camshaft's lobes determine how much air and fuel can enter the combustion chamber, as well as how much exhaust gas can exit it. The camshaft must be carefully designed to optimize engine performance, balancing factors such as power, torque, efficiency, emissions, and durability. It is typically made of hardened steel or cast iron, and may have journals for bearings at either end or along its length. Proper maintenance of the camshaft includes regular oil changes to ensure lubrication and prevent wear from metal-to-metal contact between lobes and lifters.
