DESCRIPTION
Fan Clutch (Part Number: 3862644, Make: Cummins®):
A fan clutch is a component in a commercial truck's cooling system that regulates the operation of the engine cooling fan. It is typically mounted to the water pump and connected to the radiator fan. The fan clutch works by sensing the temperature of the engine and engaging or disengaging the fan accordingly. When the engine is running hot, the clutch engages, causing the fan to spin at a higher speed, which increases airflow across the radiator. This helps dissipate heat and maintains optimal engine temperature. Conversely, when the engine is cool, the clutch disengages, allowing the fan to spin at a lower speed or even free-wheel, reducing unnecessary drag on the engine and conserving power. The fan clutch is crucial in preventing engine overheating and ensuring efficient cooling system operation.
