DESCRIPTION
The gear cover, also known as the timing cover, is a component of an engine that encloses and protects the timing gears and chain or belt. It is typically made of metal or plastic and is bolted onto the front of the engine block. The gear cover also houses the crankshaft seal and may have provisions for mounting accessories such as the water pump or alternator. In some cases, it may have a removable plate for accessing the timing gears. The part number 3638993 refers to a specific gear cover model used in certain truck engines.
