DESCRIPTION
The lock plate (part number 556711) is a small metal component found in the steering column of a truck. Its purpose is to prevent the steering wheel from accidentally disengaging from the steering shaft while driving. The lock plate is made up of several small tabs that engage with corresponding slots in the steering shaft, locking the two components together. When the ignition key is turned, a pin pushes down on the lock plate, releasing it from its locked position and allowing for normal steering function. In some cases, a faulty lock plate can cause issues with steering or prevent the vehicle from starting altogether. It is important to regularly inspect and maintain this component to ensure safe and reliable operation of your truck's steering system.
