DESCRIPTION
A crankshaft key is a small rectangular metal piece used in internal combustion engines to connect the crankshaft to the engine's flywheel or harmonic balancer. The key fits into a slot on the end of the crankshaft and also into a corresponding slot on the flywheel or harmonic balancer. This connection allows power from each piston's combustion stroke to be transferred from the crankshaft to the flywheel or harmonic balancer, which in turn powers other engine components like the transmission and accessories. If a crankshaft key fails, it can cause serious damage to various engine components, so it is important that high-quality keys are used and replaced when necessary.
