DESCRIPTION
The idler shaft is an essential component of a truck's engine, responsible for maintaining proper tension on the serpentine belt that drives various accessories such as the alternator and air conditioning compressor. It is typically a long, thin metal rod with grooves or teeth along its length to engage with the belt. The idler shaft rotates on bearings mounted in brackets attached to the engine block or cylinder head. Over time, wear and tear can cause these bearings to fail, leading to belt slippage and potential damage to other components.
