DESCRIPTION
The idler shaft, also known as the tensioner shaft or belt tensioner pulley shaft, is a component found in engines equipped with a serpentine belt system. It is responsible for maintaining proper tension on the belt, preventing slippage and ensuring efficient power transfer to various engine accessories such as the alternator, water pump and air conditioning compressor. The idler shaft typically consists of a sturdy metal rod equipped with one or more pulleys that guide the belt along its path. Over time, the bearings within the pulleys may wear out or become damaged, leading to excessive noise or even failure of the entire system. Regular maintenance and replacement of worn components can help ensure optimal performance and longevity of both the idler shaft and related engine components.
