It is typically used during engine repairs or maintenance to ensure that the valve timing is set correctly. The gauge consists of a metal plate with notches that correspond to specific degrees of rotation on the engine's crankshaft. By placing the plate against the engine block and aligning it with markings on the crankshaft pulley, mechanics can accurately measure the position of the camshaft in relation to the crankshaft.
