DESCRIPTION
A thermostat is a component in an engine cooling system that regulates the flow of coolant through the engine. Part number 4318948 is a specific model used in trucks. The thermostat works by opening and closing a valve that controls the flow of coolant based on the temperature of the engine. When the engine is cold, the valve remains closed, preventing coolant from circulating and allowing the engine to warm up faster. Once the engine reaches its operating temperature, typically around 195 degrees Fahrenheit for most trucks, the thermostat opens and allows coolant to flow through to maintain a consistent temperature. If a thermostat fails, it can cause overheating or poor fuel economy due to an inefficiently running engine.
